Our Mission Statement
To obtain dogs & cats from shelters and pounds with high euthanasia rates. We will advocate for that animal in hopes of finding he or she new forever home. We will provide the ground work for the pet such as spay/neuter, vaccinations, vet care and basic training.
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
I am going to share JUST A FEW examples of the MANY animals that have come to us needing food, vet care, love and understanding. Some come to us only needing a second chance, but many need much more than that. I know many of our neighbors in our rural area don't understand the concept of what we do or WHY we do what we do. Maybe if I put some pictures up they can grasp the concept better. Honestly, in this community where everyone knows everyone's business, most people would rather gossip and do things out of spite than actually do something productive and help the effort. So, we will keep on keeping on as long as we can. In the mean time if you don't know already we are rich and very blessed because our rewards don't come in monetary gain(God knows that don't happen in this line of work) it comes in the form of gracious doggy kisses and adoring cat purrs! As long as they are happy with our efforts, guess it does not matter what everyone else thinks.
Bandit when she came to us starved and neglected! Bandit Now! Speckles was abandoned in an apartment for 3 weeks with her 8 pups. After being with us for 2 months
BEFORE AFTER BEFORE AFTER
Princess lived in an out building in her past home with 2 of her siblings. They more or less fended for them selves. Every bone in her body was jutting out when she came in. With some TLC you can see she blossomed in to a beautiful little dog.
This little girl is Mocha. The lady who owned her was going to have her put down because she could not afford to have her treated for scabies. I took her in and took care of her. It took 6 weekly trips to the vet to get her healed from the mange. Once the mange was cured she got rickets. That is where the body does not know how to metabolize the calcium and phosphorus in the food they eat. She was put on some special supplements and it cleared right up. The last picture on the right is Mocha today, she is my spoiled baby.
FYI: Mocha is NOT for adoption! I don't know how many calls from people wanting to adopt her. She is MY forever baby.
FACT
Did you know that if you surrender your animal to a county pound in most states that they are not obligated to hold the dog a certain amount of time? They by law can euthanize the animal without holding it for 7-14 days like they do a stray. They have to hold strays by law for a period of time so the rightful owner can come claim it. If you surrender a pit bull or other breeds that are deemed aggressive they can take it and put it down the minute you walk out the door, and there is nothing you can do about it. Not all shelters and pounds are like this(our pound in Patrick County tries to give everyone a fair chance), it would pay to ask some questions or do some research before dumping your animal thinking it will have a chance of getting a new home. In our state and the other southern states that is just fairy tale dream. The facts are if your dog is not a puppy, or highly desired pure bred the chances of it getting out alive is slim to none. THAT IS THE TRUTH!
NEWS
We are redoing our web site as well as our business plan. We are not considered a home based rescue anymore. We are considered a kennel and have been given permission from the county to obtain 1 kennel license. Our focus is still on needy animals who need a 2nd chance. We are NOT a non profit. We are a private rescue kennel. We pay business taxes like any normal business.
NOTE:
If any animal is listed as fostered, that means THEY ARE NOT LOCATED AT OUR KENNEL. Fostered, means that they are temporarily living with a foster family who takes care of them at THEIR HOME for our kennel! They are still available for adoption through our kennel.
We are only allowed 1 kennel license at our location. That means we can house no more than 20 dogs over the age of 4 months at our kennel. So, we must utilize foster homes. Most of our available slots here at our kennel are taken by dogs who will live out their life with us. They are dogs with issues(age, behavior quirks, health issues etc) that would be hard to place in adoptive homes. When we take an animal in we accept the fact they may be with us for the duration of their life.
WE NEED FOSTER HOMES!
If you would like to be a foster for Our Critters Kennel please let us know. We will provide for all the needs of the animal( food, heart worm prevention, vet care etc), you will just be required to provide a home at your location, love and attention for the foster animal until we can place he/she in a forever life long home. Please email us for our KENNEL foster application.
